Murals in the Market A Permanent Reminder of Design Fest

Eastern Market and the Detroit Design Festival unveiled a series of 45 murals in the treasured old-line shopping district last week. Organizers say that the murals' goal, in part, is creating "a shared sense of place." Managed by fine art publisher 1XRUN and Market-based Inner State Gallery, the murals remain, though design fest closed up shop over the weekend (til 2016!). While the work may seem brand-new to visitors, its conception, implementation and creation are the result of four years of effort by the team at Eastern Market, Inner State, 1XRUN and the featured artists.

The murals, scattered over Eastern Market's campus, will also find their way into a series of print releases managed by 1xRUN, which will offer Murals in the Market at noon every day via their website. Design Fest may have ended, but these murals alone justify a trip (or three) to Eastern Market.

Some of the artists whose work you'll see atMurals in the Market include Beau Stanton, Brian Lacey, Ellen Rutt, Eugene Carland, Glenn Barr, Hannah Stouffer, Hebru Brantley, the Hygienic Dress League, Martha Cooper, Rick Williams, Sydney G. James, Taylor White, and Ron Zakrin.
