Orleans + Winder is taking its summer pop up success in Sugar Hill and making it permanent with a new Detroit flagship store in Eastern Market. Despite failing to land this year's Hatch Detroit $50,000 prize, the Detroit retailer is making things brick-and-mortar official with the new store set to open on September 24.
Orleans + Winder will feature high-end clothing and home décor pieces, many of them handmade. The new store will have an 1,800 square foot showroom, and the owners plan to highlight work by local and international artists and designers. Other plans include using the space for special events including film screenings, literary readings and "trunk shows," where visiting vendors can showcase their wares.
"Our mission with Orleans + Winder is to bring the finest emerging and independent design to Eastern Market. We will create both a retail space offering artisanally made pieces from local and global designers," owner Erin Wetzel said Wetzel also sees the shop as "a space for the community to connect through independent trunk shows, film screenings, product launches and art shows. Melding art and slow fashion in such a vibrant place as Eastern Market is our dream come true," Wetzel added.
With shoes that go for $1200 and baubles described as an "exploration of jewelry as sacred objects of ritual adornment," we're hoping this cool new shop will have a few cool new clearance sales. Orleans + Winder started in an old brewery in Eastern Market, taking the company name from the cross streets there. The opening soiree for Orleans + Winder takes place Sept 24 from 6pm to 10pm as part of Eastern Market after Dark.
