A full-service musical instrument store run by musicians in the middle of Motown — seems like a novel idea! Third Wave Music, owned and run by Jen David and Jeffrey Thomas, opened last week in the newly renovated Forest Arms. We stopped by to chat and have a look around.

David, whose mom runs Evola Music in Shelby Township, grew up around music and has wanted to open her own place. She lived in Midtown near the Forest Arms, and when she saw it was going to be renovated, she felt like this was the right place to open her store.
They had to get creative with the basement space, and figure out how to display the instruments on the walls. Much of the display shelving was hand built, and David says that they’re still working through construction. “Every time you come back, it will look different,” she says.
Third Wave held grand opening celebrations all week, and had musicians set up for performances in one corner. In addition to selling used and vintage instruments, they offer new accessories, locally made products, lessons, repairs, and consignment.
Here’s a look at their garden-level space in the Forest Arms.
They’ll also be open with performances on Noel Night and are excited about their location for Dally in the Alley. And since we love to look back and appreciate great work, here’s our gallery from two years ago of the Forest Arms renovation in progress.
