Is the rent too damn high?

Michelle & Chris Gerard

Welcome to Friday Open Threads, wherein we'll pass the mic to readers to speak up about topics of interest, distress, horror, etc. Have something you want discussed? Let us know. This week’s topic: renting in Detroit.

Last week, we asked our readers to share their experiences buying a home in Detroit. Our readers told us some pretty intense, detailed stories ranging from non-responsive realtors to learning about a past murder in the house to trying to get insurance (good luck) to trying to find a place to dump the debris of an abandoned home.

Yikes.

For those not ready to make that kind of commitment, we’re opening the topic up to renting in Detroit. Each week, we post Curbed Comparisons, looking at a different rentals available at a certain price point. But we do know some of the difficulties in renting here. We also know that to find the better places, it’s much easier to know someone who knows someone.

So how difficult was it to find your rental? Has your landlord helped with your rental problems? Have you been priced out of a long term rental? What would you suggest to people just moving to the city?

Share you stories in the comments.
