Mayor Mike Duggan announced 11 more winners of Motor City Match grant funding to help them grow or expand in Detroit’s neighborhoods. MCM connects new and expanding businesses with Detroit real estate opportunities and provides them with funding and technical support.
Grants range in size from $15,000 to $75,000 and have been awarded to a range of small businesses, including Twisted Roots, a beauty supply store to be located in Eastern Market; LiveCycleDelight, a cycling studio in West Village that won the Hatch Detroit contest last year; Block Party LLC, a property owner developing a space on Livernois that will house multiple tenants, including a sushi lounge and Japanese ramen noodle restaurant; and Third Wave Music, which will set up in the Forest Arms first floor.
Seven of the eleven grant winners are minority-owned businesses. Eight are woman-owned. Six of the eleven grant winners are new businesses, and nine of the businesses are owned by Detroiters.A full list of recipients can be found here.
Each quarter, up to $500,000 in grant dollars is available as well as business planning classes and other technical assistance. With this fourth round of grant awards, MCM has provided $2 million in funds to nearly 40 small businesses, which have helped to leverage $13 million in investment in these ventures.
In addition to the larger grants, the round four winners include:
- 50 applicants that receive Business Plan Awards for free business planning classes. These entrepreneurs have great business ideas but have not yet formulated their plans or need help strengthening their plans before pursuing space.
- 26 businesses that receive Space Awards, which connect new or existing businesses with top available Detroit real estate and financial planning assistance. These applicants can be new business ventures with a strong business plan or existing businesses looking to expand into a new space.
- 7 businesses that receive Design Awards for free architectural support and other assistance to design and plan their renovations in their selected locations.
The next application window for building and business owners to apply to Motor City Match will be open from September 1 to October 1.
