Big news for fans of modern architecture next to historic design. In an article from dbusiness, we’ve learned that a new 11-story building will go up behind the Westin Book Cadillac. In addition, an eight story building will rise next to the Farwell Building. Both can be seen in the picture above.
Capitol Park Partnership, which has led the renovation of the Detroit Savings Bank and is working on the Capitol Park Building and the Farwell Building, is leading the project.
Zago Architecture Inc. in Los Angeles, which has designed MOCAD and the Greening of Detroit Pavillion in Lafayette Park, is designing the buildings.
The first one (pictured above), behind the Westin Book Cadillac, will be on the northwest corner of Griswold and State at the former Theodore’s Family Diner Eatery. The second one next to the Farwell Building will be built on an empty lot.

The Farwell Building is undergoing its own changes. According to dbusiness,
"...the historic Farwell Building in Detroit’s Capitol Park is shifting into high gear toward a complete renovation into 82 residential apartments, office spaces, retail and restaurant areas, and a rooftop deck."
"The apartments will include studio, one-bedroom, and two-bedroom units. The second floor, which spans 12,000 square feet, will be converted into office space. The first floor and lower level will offer space for retail and service firms, along with a restaurant or two."
The projected completion date for the Farwell is fall 2017. Kraemer Design Group is the lead architect.
We’ll be publishing a new Capitol Park renovation map this week with all the updates.
