Shinola Hotel to break ground this week

Shinola and Dan Gilbert’s Bedrock will break ground this week on the Shinola Hotel, which will transform the 1400 block of Woodward (across from the Hudson’s site) into a 130+ room hotel. It should be completed in the fall of 2018.

The main part of the hotel will be at 1400 Woodward, which was most recently the Eastern Wig and Hair Co. Bedrock bought the building in late 2013.

We should find out more about the overall plans for the hotel this week. In October, the Historic District Commission approved demolition for three buildings on the block — 1412, 1420, and 1424 Woodward — which will be rebuilt as part of the hotel.

From what we heard at that meeting, the five buildings will be connected. An alley behind the building on Farmer will also be activated (much like the Belt Alley). The Shinola Hotel will be located close to the Metropolitan Building - which will be the Element Hotel, and the Wurlitzer Building, which is also being transformed into a hotel.

We’ll update with clearer plans and hopefully pictures and renderings later this week.
