Open Streets Detroit 2017: A photo tour

The second annual Open Streets Detroit closed Michigan Avenue and West Vernor Highway to cars, but opened the busy streets to the people of Detroit. Photographers Michelle and Chris Gerard captured the festivities from the downtown high rises to the brick streets of Corktown to the colorful storefronts of Southwest Detroit.

The sunny Sunday was a perfect day for Detroiters of all ages to explore the activities and businesses along the way. MoGo bikes were free that day, and you’ll see many used as a way to get from one destination to the other; MoGo says over 2,100 rides were taken that day. Beacon Park (seen first with the Grand Army of the Republic building in the background), Roosevelt Park (with Michigan Central Station), and Clark Park were all activated, giving visitors plenty to do as they made their way through the neighborhoods. The event and the photos provide a great snapshot of the different people and places in this part of the city. Until next year...
