Sometimes, we like to revisit homes that we featured way back when. Such is the case for this Boston-Edison home which we saw twice in 2015. The house was purchased by New York artists Nik Pence and Margo Wolowiec, who moved to be closer to Margo’s family and to join the Detroit art community. Since then, they’ve restored many of the original features and they recently opened their home to the annual Boston-Edison holiday home tour. More than 800 visitors strolled through the home, and the owners showed Curbed how they incorporated the current Detroit art world into their historic home.
The couple chose to exhibit works from many local artists for the tour. This gave the visitors not only a chance to see the renovation work they’ve put in to the house, but also a look into Detroit’s art scene. Artists featured included Crystal Palmer, Willie Wayne Smith, James Collins, Matthew Angelo Harrison, Martha Mysko, Amna Ashgar, Anthony Keith Giannini, and Nolan Simon.
In the photos, you can see some of the work Pence and Wolowiec have put into the house, including sanding and repainting banisters, trim, and doors and resurfacing the stone fireplace. They also refinished the first floor bathroom and removed 90's tile work to reveal the original tile bellow in the entrance. They plan on removing more tile and restoring the original hardwood floors in the foyer and restoring the master bath. More before photos from the listing can be seen here.
They loved the opportunity to be a part of the home tour and say living in Boston-Edison has been incredible. “We really feel like we have a second family in our neighbors even for the short time that we have lived here,” says Pence. “I was sitting with two older couples from down the street last evening who purchased their houses over 40 years ago and we were joking about how we must be mad to love our houses as much as we do.” They appreciate the history of the neighborhood and see the houses as time capsules of Detroit history.
Here are a few more photos from the home tour.
