Help design a new park in Morningside

Mothers Park at Three Mile
Give a Park, Get a Park

Looking to test out your urban planning skills? A program called Give a Park, Get a Park is offering a chance to help design a new park in the Morningside neighborhood on the east side of Detroit.

The neighborhood has one small park close to I-94. The new park would combine four lots at a four-way intersection. Two have homes that will be demolished. The other two have a playscape and a memorial that must be incorporated into the design.

The proposal period has opened and proposals will be accepted until July 31. The top ideas are expected to engage with the community and offer a public space reflective of the neighborhood where residents can play, eat, and interact with each other. Designs should also increase safety and lighting in the park and offer fitness opportunities.

After the competition, the City of Detroit will publish a how-to guide so other neighborhoods and cities can model parks after the ideas and designs.

The first place design team (or individual) will win $10,000. Prizes for second and third place will be $5,000 and $2,500.
