2018 will be a big year for development in Detroit, as many big name renovations (Metropolitan Building/Element Hotel, Shinola Hotel) are completed. One of the biggest reveals will be the David Stott Building, an Art Deco skyscraper that’s suffered from negligent owners in the past. Curbed’s video team recently stopped by to check out the renovation work, seen above.
Bedrock acquired the building in 2015, and since, renovation work has been underway. A representative from Bedrock tells Curbed that currently, the windows are being replaced and that brick and terra cotta refurbishment is ongoing and should be done by the end of summer. Inside, Bedrock is building out the interior, restoring the historic elevator lobbies, replacing the elevators, and installing new HVAC and electrical equipment.
We look forward to seeing more of the finished work over the next year. For an idea of what the building was like pre-DDI ownership, our photographers stopped by in 2013. As for its next use, we still have a generic mixed-use label on it. One thing we do know: Every time we post about it, our readers want SkyBar back. Take note, Dan Gilbert.
