The bar closed this weekend

The popular Cheli’s Chili Bar next to Comerica Park closed this weekend, as former Detroit Red Wing Chris Chelios announced earlier this month. Chelios moved back to Chicago to take care of family. This weekend, it was announced that the building sold to the Ilitch family.

Chelios told the Detroit News, “The Ilitches purchased it from me, and they’re looking for tenants. I’m sure whatever this place becomes will still be great.”

Olympia tells Curbed that they have no news to announce today on the future plans for the building.

The Ilitches own numerous properties and parking lots around the area, including the Fox Theatre and the Little Caesars Arena.

The interesting Tudor at Grand Circus Park is known as the Women’s Exchange building, where women would sell arts and crafts, bake goods, and more in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Victorian buildings at the property date back to the 1880s, and the facade with its current look was designed by Smith, Hinchman, and Grylls in 1916.
