The Fisher Building has a new largest tenant.

Strategic Staffing Solutions (S3), an IT and business services company based in Detroit, will move its headquarters into three floors occupying 57,400 square feet at the iconic New Center building. The move is expected to be finished by the end of 2019.

After renovations are complete, corporate and branch offices will move into two additional floors by mid-summer 2020. The company employs as many as 1,400 people, according to Crain’s Detroit Business.

“We are delighted to be moving into the Fisher Building. Our company continues to grow and we have reached the point where we need to expand our physical space,” S3 founder and CEO Cynthia Pasky said in a release. “The Fisher building is located in a growing neighborhood, and it’s more convenient for many of our employees and consultants.”

The news is a blow to the Penobscot Building. For the last 20 years, S3 has occupied three floors of the downtown building and was its second largest tenant, Crain’s Detroit Business reports.

As recently as four months ago, S3 executive vice president Jeff Nelson told Crain’s that the Penobscot could absorb growth from his company, which invested $260,000 in new space.

In September this year, Penobscot tenants complained of malfunctioning elevators. Meanwhile The Platform, owners of the Fisher Building, closed on a $36 million loan refinancing to continue much-needed maintenance and preservation efforts.
