At the corner of Woodward and Michigan avenues downtown, Bedrock has opened up a popup community space in a large flex room at the 1001 Woodward building.
The ground-floor public space, called “The Story,” is free and open to the public and comes with a number of amenities. There’s a cafe with WiFi, tables for working, and beverages provided by Dessert Oasis; sofas and chairs for lounging; and an area for kids to craft. Guests can also write postcards—and choose from nine different designs by Detroit artists—then place it in a box for mailing.
Designed by commercial interior design studio Pophouse, the aesthetic is based on the Danish concept of hygge (pronounced HOO-GUH), which roughly translates to “cozy.” There’s a winter theme with a white, gray, and blue color palette, as well as curated music and even a seasonal scent created by candlemaker Detroit Wick.
“Our thought was let’s make it a space where people can come and work, but also make it an inclusive and hospitable environment,” says Jennifer Janus, president of Pophouse. “Come in, take a break from being out in the cold, and have a cup of coffee or hot chocolate.”
The ceiling-to-floor windows framed by black granite columns make the space attractive as well. During the day, it’s filled with sunlight, but it’s inviting after dark as well.
“Once it gets dark, all the lights from Campus Martius and trees flood into the space and it transforms into a totally different environment,” Janus says. “We were very fortunate to have such a good shell to work with.”
The Story is open daily, except on holidays, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. through January 3.
