Google to expand, add jobs in Michigan and Detroit

Google recently announced that it’s undertaking a $17-million expansion of its Michigan offices, both increasing office space and adding jobs at its two hubs in Detroit and Ann Arbor.

According to the Detroit Free Press, the tech giant currently employs about 600 in Michigan, mostly in sales and technical support. While the company declined to state exactly how many jobs it would add, it said the number would be “significant.”

In Detroit, Google operates out of an office attached to the Little Caesars Arena, where it plans to lease an additional floor. In total, the company will add 90,000 square feet of office space in Michigan, the Free Press reports.

The expansions are expected to be complete by the end of 2020 in Detroit, and the end of 2021 in Ann Arbor.

In April this year, Google’s self-driving automobile affiliate Waymo announced that it would manufacture self-driving cars in Detroit at the former American Axle & Manufacturing plant near Hamtramck. The $13.6 million redevelopment would create up to 400 jobs.
