10 Detroit developments set to debut in 2018

Will 2018 be the year of hotels in Detroit? Three big hotels—The Siren Hotel, the Shinola Hotel, and the Element Detroit Hotel—are set to open in 2018 all within a two-block section of downtown Detroit. These new hotels will activate long-vacant properties with new high-end restaurants and retail spots for visitors and residents alike.

We’ll also see the first phase of City Modern open to new residents. This larger housing development by Bedrock is adding very modern design to a historic neighborhood.

More new construction is also on the way in New Center (Third & Grand) and around the Little Caesars Arena (the Mike Ilitch School of Business, the Little Caesars World Headquarters). But we love a good renovation, and we can’t wait to see the David Stott Building open again.

1. The Siren Hotel

The Siren Hotel in the Wurlitzer Building is set to open in January with 106 rooms, seven food and beverage spaces, two retail boutiques, and a rooftop with panoramic views of the city spread across 55,000 square feet. The building will also feature a mural by British artist Quentin Jones. We had a sneak peek of the space this summer, and we can’t wait to see the Wurltizer Building open once again.

2. First phase of City Modern

Townhouses and carriage houses are expected to open in the first part of 2018 at Bedrock’s City Modern. In total, the development will add over 400 new residences to the neighborhood. This will include apartments, rehabbing old houses, and senior apartments.

3. Saint Charles Residences

Over in Islandview, Banyan is renovating and adding on to the Saint Charles School to create the Saint Charles Residences. The entire development will take shape in phases, but the first phase should see high-end condos open in 2018. Expect more new construction on this block in the coming years.

4. Little Caesars World Headquarters

The new nine-story Little Caesars World Headquarters is set to open downtown in 2018. The facade will have 14-foot-tall glass slices facing Woodward Avenue.

Six stories of new apartments will open in New Center as Third & Grand. Located along Grand Boulevard near the Lodge, the Platform will bring 231 new apartments, along with parking and commercial space to the area. This is one of many new projects underway in New Center.

6. Mike Ilitch School of Business

Right down the block from the Little Caesars Arena, the Mike Ilitch School of Business is set to open for students in fall 2018. The Wayne State building will have open collaboration spaces, student support facilities, classrooms, offices, lab space, a business incubator pop-up, and a cafe.

7. David Stott Building

The Art Deco skyscraper is set to reopen in 2018 with residential, retail, and office space. Bedrock bought the building a few years back and has been working on the restoration. It’s one of the most beautiful, prominent buildings in Detroit’s skyline, and we’re so excited to see it open again.

8. Farwell Building

A historic rehab of the Farwell Building in Capitol Park is underway, turning offices into 82 luxury apartments plus commercial space. Expect this renovation to be completed in late 2018.

9. The Shinola Hotel

Opening in late 2018, the Shinola Hotel is remaking most of a block in downtown Detroit. The development includes the renovation of 1400 Woodward and the Singer Building, plus new construction between and behind the buildings. Expect an activated alley in between them. The hotel will have 130 rooms, plus plenty of restaurant and retail space.

The long-vacant Metropolitan Building is undergoing a $32 million redevelopment into the Element Detroit Hotel. Right around the corner from The Siren Hotel, and across the street from the Shinola Hotel, the Element will offer extended stay options for visitors. From our sneak peek pre-renovation earlier this year, we were able to see the incredible detailing that remains on the ground level.
